Q/A: Are You a Faithful Person

I like to begin class with a Q/A.   A Q/A is a question or an idea to be explored. Here is an example: Q/A:  Faithfulness is one of the most important qualities in a person’s life.  A faithful person is trustworthy and reliable.  If you were a faithful person, describe the behaviors/characteristics you would be demonstrating everyday. After you students provide what they consider faithful behaviors provide the list below.  These are characteristics of a faithful person.    Challenge […]

Are You Generous? Q/A

TRUE GENEROSITY I like to begin class with a Q/A.   A Q/A is a question or an idea to be explored. Here is an example: Q/A   Are you a generous person?  I consider myself a generous person because…… I am not a generous person because……. TEACHER HINT:  a generous person is someone who is other oriented.  In other words, when a generous person sees someone in need, they see an opportunity to express a generosity of spirit.  Generosity […]

The Definition of a Gentleman– an activity for our students

This would be an interesting survey to give your high school boys.  There is also a girl version. The information comes from an article in the Gentleman’s Journal entitled 20 Things that Make a Man a Gentleman ( https://www.thegentlemansjournal.com/20-things-make-man-gentleman/)  It has a lot to do with manners, consideration of others and presentation.  It may lead to an interesting discussion.  I don’t think our students see men like this on TV, videos or in the movies.  Are You a Gentleman A Simple […]

You’ll Always Know Who Loves You by the Way You are Treated.

Long before I teach the Human Growth and Development unit (Sex-Ed), I have the students write/explain: What LOVE is? What does love look like? How do you know someone loves you? How do you show love? The students talk about feelings. It’s rare when they initially talk about sacrificing for someone else. You sacrifice for what/who you love. This is my opinion, I don’t think a person really knows what love is until they have a baby. For the first […]

The Difference Between Men and Women

The units taught before Sex Ed are The Difference Between Men and Women and What is Love. As a result of the sexual harassment events dominating the news lately and the resulting #MeToo movement, these topics need to be included in our curriculum to facilitate good decision making for our students. Boys and Girls are physically different. I’m talking body parts; I don’t think I need to explain that. Boys and girls are biologically different. That refers to physical strength, […]

Are You Jealous? You decide!

Here is an activity where you can pose this simple question to your students the first few minutes of Health Class. Project this on the board or give your students a copy. Ask your students to consider if they ever think these thoughts or have acted them out. Jealousy is a health issue. It leads to unhappy, depressed and lonely people. This information can lead to a discussion if they see evidence of it at school, at home, in […]

What is Sex Texting?

Do you know what to do about Sex Texting?

What is Sexting? There was a front page (that continued to the entire back page) article in the local paper today (April 27, 2017). The local police are going to middle and high schools to explain social media consequences in hopes of preventing future cases of cyberbullying and child pornography. Did you know, one in five teenagers is sending sexually explicit photos electronically? “I didn’t know the consequences, I just knew it was bad” confessed a student after listening […]

This is Why Behavior is More Important Than Feelings!!

I’ve noticed more of our students arrive at school preoccupied / focused on themselves and their feelings.  They are ruled by their emotions which is a recipe for their unhappiness, and everyone around them. This is more than a teenage passing phase.  We do live in a feeling based culture where people are urged to get in touch with their feelings and you have a right to express them freely (sometimes in class).  I don’t see a lot of joy, […]

How do You Know if Your Friends are True?

Have this personal Health question on the board for your entering students to see, reflect upon then write an answer in preparation for the beginning of class.  This is an important question to think about for all of us (not just teens) because our tendency is to do what our friends do.  They influence our behavior.  So it is important to investigate the different types of friendships while you evaluate your friendships. How do I know if MY friendships are […]
