The Becoming Who You Want to Be book includes all the lessons for the first 4 weeks of health classes. It provides the foundation that students work from throughout the rest of the term. They learn and practice skills that have meaning in their life.
The work I’ve designed in this book is meant to provide personal meaning for each student. What is more interesting to a teenager, than who they are – themselves? They are teenagers and there is so much they don’t know about themselves. Learning their own personality style and the styles of others, explains why people in their lives behave the way they do. Understanding their self-image and how to develop it over time through their actions enables them to say No to the things that are not good for their future. All these skills help enable students to make better decisions.
As a teacher, I want to engage my students to work at a deeper level. Every lesson and activity in this book has been designed to engage the student with what they want, their values and needs for themselves. If they actively begin to calculate personal costs and decide ahead of time whether a temptation/attraction is worth the potential consequences, I’ve succeeded in engaging them. If they begin walking toward their goals and something misdirects them, but they are able to redirect themselves back toward their goals than these lessons have been a positive influence they will continue to use through their lives.
